This month we explore a beginner partnering lesson plan you can use in your studio to help students experience the power of connection firsthand. Every exercise is designed to build trust, reinforce eye contact, and introduce safe weight sharing and lifts, so your students not only learn steps, but feel the silent dialogue that makes partnering truly magical.
Level: Beginner
Duration: 60–75 minutes
Focus: Partnering basics, eye contact, connection, weight sharing, and introductory lifts
1. Warm-Up (10–15 minutes)
Objective: Prepare the body and mind for partnering; focus on awareness and connection.
Activities:
Solo warm-up (5–7 min): Stretching, core activation, gentle pliés, and alignment exercises. Emphasize posture and center of gravity.
Partner awareness warm-up (5–8 min):
Stand in pairs, facing each other.
Mirror each other’s movements slowly (raise arms, tilt, step sideways).
Focus on eye contact and maintaining shared rhythm.
2. Connection and Eye Contact Exercises (10–15 minutes)
Objective: Build trust and non-verbal communication skills.
Activities:
Eye Contact Circle:
Form a circle with partners.
One person leads slow movements (hands, arms, torso).
Partner mirrors while keeping eye contact.
Lead-Follow Walking:
Walk together around the studio.
Leader guides with light hand or arm cues; follower responds without verbal instructions.
3. Weight Sharing Basics (15 minutes)
Objective: Introduce shared balance and basic partnering support.
Activities:
Counterbalance Lean:
Partners stand back-to-back.
Slowly lean into each other to feel mutual support.
Supported Side Step:
Partners stand side by side, holding hands or shoulders.
Practice shifting weight together while stepping to the side.
4. Introductory Lifts (15 minutes)
Objective: Safely introduce lifts and trust-building exercises.
Activities:
Mini Lift from Ground Support:
One dancer squats slightly while the other leans forward gently, resting hands on shoulders.
Arm Support Lift:
Begin with a simple thigh-to-hand lift. Focus on communication, alignment, and eye contact.
5. Partnered Improvisation / Creative Connection (10 minutes)
Objective: Encourage exploration of connection in movement.
Activities:
Pairs create a short 8–16 count sequence using eye contact, weight sharing, and gentle lifts or supported turns.
Share sequences with the group, focusing on trust and communication, not perfection.
6. Cool Down and Reflection (5–10 minutes)
Objective: End class with mindfulness and reinforce partnership principles.
Activities:
Gentle stretching while seated or standing.
Partners hold hands or shoulders, close eyes, and take a few deep breaths together.
Reflection circle: ask each pair what they noticed about connection, trust, and communication today.
