MENTAL HEALTH TIPS FOR YOUR DANCE STUDENTS

As dance educators, we do far more than teach choreography and technique—we help shape the mental and emotional well-being of our students. While dance can be an incredible outlet for expression and growth, it can also bring pressures that impact young dancers' mental health. By being mindful of how we support our students both physically and emotionally, we can foster a healthier, more balanced dance environment. Here are ten practical tips to help you support your dancers’ mental well-being in and out of the studio.

1. Model Balance

Remind students that rest and recovery are part of training. Encourage breaks when you see fatigue.

2. Use Language That Builds Confidence

Correct technique without criticizing the person. Words shape how dancers feel about themselves.

3. Normalize Mistakes

Celebrate effort and curiosity. Let students know that mistakes are part of the learning process.

4. Watch for Overtraining and Burnout

If a student seems unusually tired, irritable, or withdrawn, check in with them. Sometimes they need permission to slow down.

5. Encourage Healthy Fueling

Talk about food as energy and strength, not appearance. Avoid comments on body shape.

6. Teach Breathing and Centering

Incorporate a minute of deep breathing or mindfulness at the start or end of class to help with focus and stress.

7. Set Process-Oriented Goals

Guide students to focus on small improvements (“lift your posture today”) instead of just outcomes (“win the competition”).

8. Create a Safe, Inclusive Studio Atmosphere

Ensure your classroom feels safe for everyone, free of comparison, ridicule, or favoritism.

9. Encourage Self-Reflection

Ask students what went well each week, not only what to fix.

10. Know When to Offer Support

If a student is struggling emotionally, listen without judgment and, when appropriate, guide them (and their parents if minors) toward additional support.

Remember, we want our dancers to have both strong bodies AND strong minds.

Be well everyone.

See you in the dance studio,

Jess
